Tea Ceremony Art - Beautiful Japanese Calligraphy

wa kei sei jaku
"Four Virtues of Tea"

Calligraphy displayed during a tea ceremony honors both the guest and the occasion. These works of art often feature a seasonal phrase or a quality commemorating the coming together.

One classic phrase is the scroll shown on the right of the Four Virtues of Tea which is read wakeiseijaku and are Harmony, Respect, Purity and Tranquility.

As the tea ceremony is a traditional art, the framing and the display will often be more formal using scrolls such as that on the right or on Japanese Paper using a natural material frame such as bamboo or wood.

Below we show just a few ideas of what is possible using classic phrases for the Tea Ceremony. You are welcome to select from one of these or use a phrase of your own. Each work is an original work of art by the hand of Master Japanese Calligrapher Eri Takase.

Takase Studios offers both Custom Japanese Scrolls and Custom Unframed Japanese Calligraphy. Each allows you to interact directly with Master Japanese Calligrapher Eri Takase to create a unique work of art to commemorate the occasion.

About the Artist

Master Japanese Calligrapher, or more properly, Shihan Eri Takase has been living and working in the United States since 1995. Her work has sold all over the world as custom art for individuals, on commercial products, in books, magazines, and in film. Her brand of traditional Japanese calligraphy has been described as refined and cultured. After a lifetime study of traditional calligraphy in Japan, Master Takase has devoted herself to adapting the art of Japanese Calligraphy to new mediums and methods and the results are breathtaking.
