This page shows the twelve signs of the Japanese Zodiac.
There are many different symbols for the
Japanese and Chinese zodiacs. As an example the character
is the common character for year of the
rat. In the context of the zodiac this is clear. However, this is also the
character for child and this is the most common reading. To be clear in all
context the character for "year" is added as in
which is read as nezumidoshi
in Japanese.
Also be careful because the translations are also traditional and
the modern readings and meanings are different. For example, ushi is translated as ox where the kanji
used is
which outside of the context
of the zodiac is translated as cow. Similarly
hitsuji is given as ram where the kanji used is
which means sheep. In general
Japanese does not distinguish animal gender and for some reason the traditional
translations uses the male gender in English.
In the following designs the main character is the animal associated with the zodiac and in the upper right is the traditional name of the zodiac.
