Full Names in Japanese

Perfect for belts and certificates!

The names are in katakana which is the standard way non-Japanese names are translated to Japanese and is how names appear in dictionaries, in the newspaper and in magazines. Katakana preserves the pronunciation and is the option most likely to be recognized as a name. And, because katakana is like an alphabet, there are no hidden meanings to worry about.

True Victory is Victory Over Oneself
正勝吾勝
masakatsu agatsu

The Japanese phrase "masakatsu agatsu" was coined by the founder of Aikido Morihei Ueshiba. This principle teaches that we may not have control over others but we should always have control over ourselves.

There is No First Strike in Karate
空手に先手なし
karate ni sente nashi

The Japanese phrase karate ni sente nashi means "There is no first attack in karate" or "There is no first strike in karate" and reminds us that karate is for defense only.

This is the second rule in Niju Kun, or twenty rules, established by the founder of Shotokan Karate Gichin Funakoshi. For more information see the excellent article Karate ni Sente Nashi: What the Masters had to Say by Mark J. Tankosich.

Death Before Dishonor (fumeiyo yori shi) - Japanese Kanji Design

Death Before Dishonor
不名誉より死

fumeiyo yori shi

The Japanese phrase fumeiyo yori shi is composed of the words fumeiyo meaning "dishonor", yori  meaning "more than; rather than" and shi meaning "death". Japanese (see Japanese Language for more information) has the verb at the end of the sentence which is why this appears to be backwards when translated word for word into English. With this in mind, a literal translation of the Japanese is "rather than dishonor, death".
